Carlos Slim Helú (#1) is the world’s richest person on Forbes’ 27th annual ranking of the world’s billionaires. With a net worth of $73 billion, up from $69 billion in 2012, the telecom magnate from Mexico tops the list for the fourth year in a row.
Slim, 74, grew his fortune by an estimated $4 billion in the last year thanks to impressive returns at Grupo Financiero Inbursa, the billionaire’s financial arm.
He also expanded his empire, pushing into Europe through an acquisition of a Dutch telecom company and a majority stake in Spanish soccer club Real Oviedo. Slim also owns significant stakes in retail, industrial, real estate, mining and infrastructure related companies.
Slim’s lead for the title of the world’s richest person was narrowed in 2012 as the net worth of Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates jumped by $6 billion to $67 billion
Carlos Slim Helu is the world's richest man for the fourth year in a row. He clocks in at $4 billion more than a year ago, thanks to surging stock prices at his financial arm, Grupo Financiero Inbursa, and at his Grupo Carso industrial and retail giant. Pan-Latin American mobile telecom outfit America Movil remains his most valuable holding at $36.3 billion; the company spread its wings to Europe in the past year, buying pieces of Dutch telecom company KPN and Telekom Austria. Other listed companies focus on mining, real estate and infrastructure. Slim does not hold an executive position at any of the companies he controls, but remains engaged and advises on strategy. He put his sons, Carlos, Marco Antonio and Patrick, in charge of the industrial, finance and telecom companies he controls
